My OC Review: Barbara's Pavillion

Love this gay dive bar! Barbara's will always have a special place in my heart. When I moved to OC a few years ago, I spent many a drunken night there singing karaoke. Took my mom to B's for Mother's Day once and she LOVED it. So many menz bought her shots after she sang "I Feel Pretty.:" (Alas, she doesn't drink.)

And now neither do I (nor smoke), so I can't imagine hittin' Barbara's if I can't do either vice. So a year ago I'd have given it 5 stars, but since I'm a mom now and can't enjoy my Kools like I used to, it's 4 stars. In other words, beware. You're liable to have the time of your life AND develop emphysema.

9/11 Scuplture at the Bank Tower

For the past eight years, today has been a tough one for me. I did not know anyone affected by the 9/11 attacks, but I felt the pain and sorrow as if I knew everyone who died there. Sadly, I have never felt so united with my co-patriots as I did on that horrible day.

So as I drove to work this morning, through tears and heartache, I was thrilled to hear on KERA that Oak Cliff was to be home to a new sculpture by Jim Gallucci honoring the 9/11 victims. The artpiece, known as The Gates, will be installed in the lobby at the Bank Tower on Zang Blvd.

My OC Review: Hunky's

I love this place. It's the first place I went to five days after giving birth, so it holds a special place in my heart. I always order the veggie burger with tater tots that are always nice and crispy. Their prices are great considering their location (a boutiquey area called Bishop Arts). And do not miss the tempura-battered onion rings, milk shakes and veggie sticks. Oh. So. Good.

My favorite part is that everyone working there always has a hello and a smile for me when I come in. Friendliness is number one for me and will always get me coming back for more.
